Eureka makes very good tents. My son uses the Eureka Spitfire 2 to camp pretty much every month for the past 5 years and it's holding up very well. It's a 2 person tent (very intimately) and weighs in at about 4.25 lbs. The Spitfire 1 only weighs 2.75 lbs. These tents provide great rain protection.

Personally, I prefer a hammock but it's not a lightweight option for cold weather though. My homemade setup weighs just over 6 lbs complete with the hammock, bugnet, straps, tarp, and storage bags, which together take up about 1/4 of the size of a backpacking tent. Top and bottom quilts (aka sleeping bags) are a lot of additional weight and bulk though for cold weather, especially since I haven't gone the down quilt route yet due to cost.

When I have to sleep on the ground, I've got a Cabelas Trekker 2 person tent that actually sleeps two pretty comfortably with gear but it's just over 7 lbs (more than what they advertise it as weighing). Or, if camping with the wife, I have a big a** Eureka Tetragon 9 that I've had for almost 20 years that weighs almost as much as my loaded backpack.

How about dumping the LandShark idea - because the guy is in Canada and the shelter isn't going to work after three hours.... Anything that is reflective also reflects sweat and chills.

He needs a bug free environment that is comfortable - the hammock can be pitched on the ground and in between the trees... it compresses to a small basketball - in colder temps a down 3/4 can be added. {custom} and a down jacket will get him there.
