I sat down and thought about where I get water when I'm out and how I take care of it.
1. I love a milbank bag because I can scoop up a lot of water and hang it to drip into my billy can then boil it or add chlorine. (I don't like drinking junk like silt so I at least use a cloth over a gathering bottle to keep out what I can.
2. There are numerous springs / seeps that I have just put my shirt over the top of my canteen cup and let the water slip into it then had my drink. So far no mishaps, but I use common sense and don't get my water from cattle fields.
3. I had one of those fancy pump filters, but found I did not use it much so it resides in a tub of "bug out" car gear to ease the minds of the kids.
A lot of worry about water comes from the eco nutz that would have you believe you are the creator of and victim of every environmental problem that exists, and that report worst case locations.
I can say one thing, not having water for more than a day or so and you will be feeling the effects for sure, drinking water that may be questionable and you might get sick.
sometimes you just pays your money and takes your chances.
