I had time to do something I do from time to time when bored. I walk threw a grocery store with camping food in mind. I have not done this in a couple years. Oh how times have changed.
Over the years Things have changed. Instant foods and packages of meat and meat products abound these days.
Now years ago it was canned goods and gorp. Spam and tuna in cans were cheep, easy to get and heavy to carry.
As I grow older, I find I have choices that can boggle a mind.
I picked up a one-pound salami and a 3-pound summer sausage. Winter means cooler temperature and so these meats can easily be taken along on weeklong trips. In summer, I would be taking canned tuna and Spam. Now I see where I can take roast beef, beef stew, pre-cooked rice, chicken and all sorts of delectable in pouches with me.
I picked up some noodle Packs with flavors and some salmon steaks in dill sauce. I picked up some 3-ounce tuna in packs and instant rice with sauce in packs, for a second meal. Pancake-mix in a, just add water and shake plastic bottle and dried bacon for a breakfast. Beef stew in a 12-ounce pack for a dinner. Instant egg noodles (I take as cooked and dehydrated or freeze dried) to go with the beef stew. The instant, just add water mac-&-cheese looked like an improvement to the old box packs, I am use too. With about the weight.
47,000 varieties of breakfast bars and energy bars were to be found. I got some Special K bars. I found Instant oatmeal and instant cream of wheat in packs. The Pre-cooked scrambled eggs were a shock but I could see where they could be a choice (though not mine).
The dried fruits isle was too much for me to want to wander threw. I did pick up a bag of dried cranberries.
Bags of ready to eat, heat and serve, vegetables of every kind, were now in packs. I got some bustle sprouts and some peas to try. I do like my veggies.
Camping foods have sure changed. I am ready for a weeks outing and I do not have to bag, sort, or carry cans. What would have been 20 pounds of food in cans and bagged by me were weighed at 12 pounds. What would have been a major part of the inside of my pack all fits in a stuff sack on the top of my pack.
It looks like this old dog needs to learn some new tricks.
I know, I will not be giving up my salami or sausage in the fall, winter and spring. Summer here and the 100+ heat makes taking these a bit tricky. Well that is till they freeze dry or powder it.
