I can remember being called in at Great Grandmas house for Sunday lunch, to have my face and hands washed by Mom. Bummer, put yourself in the shoes of a 5-6 year old boy. Now the food was good, don't get me wrong, but it didn't compare to the unbridled freedom of being outside at that mountain homestead. I didn't need food, or didn't think I did, "I wasn't just playin' Indian, I was livin' Indian."

Since as far back as I can remember we were camping. My dad was a Weblos leader and my brother and I tagged along for all their outings. When not camping with the scouts, we just loaded up the car and went down a dirt road until we found a spot and set up camp. Then in the morning we would break camp and open the tail gate of dad's station wagon and drive along looking for fishing spots.

My dad would stop when we saw a spot and my brother would jump down and check it out. One time he just yelled, "no good!". My dad thought he was on the tailgate with me and started driving. I couldn't breath I was laughing so hard watching my brother run after that car like he was going to be left out there.

As my two younger brothers got old enough to camp. We started going to campgrounds. That was with mom and sister too. We went about once a month.

I went over a decade when it was unusual for me not to fish for at least an hour a day. There were times I have gotten on a boat on Friday and not gotten off the boat until Monday morning. That's jon boats and bass trackers as well as ocean boats.

Now, my brother and I are in the woods about 25 weekends a year. Some times just for a day and sometimes for long 3 day weekends. That's how I use my vacation pay. Making my weekends 3 or 4 days long and going camping. My kids go out with us and my wife and grand daughter have started joining us as well.

My brother and I hunt together and our hunting season starts in late July and we'll camp off and on till late May. So the off season is June. And we just go for day rides out to the woods in June. LOL

Faith will be going with us to Big Cypress next week as well. We'll be out there Friday night, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Ha, Hunter, you sound like me.
They hand you things and tell you to go do something, then you take it that one step farther to make things easier and everyone would roll their eyes and say, 'Yep, that's Rich's kid, isn't it.' My dad didn't take that crap either. LOL.

I was always out in the woods as a kid. We had a river and a whole State Park we could run free in. This was back in the 70s when it was safer for parents to let kids out of earshot. Dad took us camping a lot. And fishing and sailboating.

Just yesterday I stopped in at that State Park on my way to visit a friend near there, sat down by the lake as the sun came up and wondered why I let it get away from me. I need to make more time to get Out There.
