It's been my experience that I can not rely on my family. My dad had screwed me over many times, my brother screwed me over as well. So I assume that I can't rely on anyone but myself and my wife. We are a team no matter what. But then again if you were to dig deeper than you would see that every one of us rely on others on a daily basis. We rely on our vehicle mechanics, the utility companies, the Government (well!?)

, people who serve our food etc.... It woul be hard to survive in today's world without relying on people. But if we are talking about relying on people for assistance either monetary or otherwise than I have my wife. If it help around the house such as moving etc than again I have only my wife. But I like it that way any way.

Even in a group i assume that all others will fail me and i plan accordingly. Eventually everybody will fail you. Always, Plan acordingly.

But just think, Doug. In 13 or 14 years you'll have a strapping young man around the house. Then you can count on just you and the wife.....still.

I have relied on others, sometimes disappointed, sometimes not. When my back is against the wall I depend on ME. I may decide to count on someone but that is a decision that may have many variables.

Well stated Coot, I guess that exactly were my post above (#10) came from. My observations on the follow through on commitments and promises of old and new friends. I believe that when I make a commitment it is first priority beyond family emergency and a call as soon as possible is made when I have to fail on that commitment. A commitment will be followed through despite a change in convenance or desire to help.

It seems that some folks see commitment as a variable term and can be dismissed with no consequences to the person they are helping. I've had to pay an extra day truck rental because someone returning a favor had to do something else first (oil change) six hours late no call no returned call. It effected the help on the other end of the trip. Nothing like off loading a 2000+ printing press by your self.

There are a select few people around here that I THINK I could count on, but there's no chance of betting my life on it. At the end of the day, I know I will do what needs to be done. I can count on myself no matter what event, etc. Most others will be counting on me, but I have to admit, they are not priority if they have no skills, which most of them don't. The way I sees it, you can be an asset or a liability. Most folks I know will be liabilities. It does make me think who/how I would choose and cull from a group.
Keep in mind I'm talking about people I know personally. Most of you guys I would consider assets and would be honored to have you in my group.

In some situations you have no choice but to trust others. In my line of work, it is hard to get around it. There are some that I have an easier time trusting then others. As far as bugging out or any other survival situation, I can only count on myself.

Trusting someone's integrity (honesty and loyalty) is one thing. I have about 10 people in my life who I trust to do the right thing all of the time every time.

As far as SHTF goes, you need to rely on those you trust who have both integrity AND ability. Ability translates into mastering a wide spectrum of skills, both mental and physical, over the years, as well as the experience, judgment, fortitude, and capacity to employ them as necessary.

My oldest son, 2 brothers, a nephew, and my best friend are people who I can count on for anything, any place, any time. No exceptions. My youngest son and another nephew still need a bit more experience and then they'll become part of the small group I can depend on without reservation.

For the absolute "cover my back" trust, I reserve that for about 5 guys (and 2 gals) that I have served with in nasty situations. These are the folks that stood fast onmore than one occassion and were still there when common sense said run.
