Wanting to serve my community

I have been thinking of doing some kind of volunteer work in my community when I move back home. Either volunteer firefighter, first responder, C.E.R.T team or whatever. Only problem is I have no idea where to begin on training. What kind, where to go etc. I would like to find a first responder course to take while in AK and possible EMS. Anyone have any wisdom regarding this?

I'd say decide what your best at, and what you enjoy doing. Then volunteer in a manner that allows you to do what comes naturally.

example if you like dogs- get a working dog and train it as a search dog etc...
or if your into climbing, repelling and ropes get certified in "Technical rope rescue" this passion and natural ability will enable you to be a real asset in a situation, not just another guy with a patch standing around.

You might want to check and see what will be of use in your new home. Contact them and find out what skill sets they are short of. You'll have a much better chance if you have skills or training they are short of.

You might try to find you local ESDA (Emergency Services and Disaster Agency) group. Often times they hold classes on different types of thing like First responders, Search and Rescue & EMT, ect.

Our local FD is a joke. They may save the lot, never the house and it's all good ole boy politics. We volunteered to teach adults to read. Not exactly my thing but it got to be satisfying.
