Want to go but don't have time to bait every day for the three weeks prior to going.
First time hunting bear as well. I have two choices of firearms 870 Express super Mag or a 30-30 lever action.

YES, it is possible.......Firdy-Firdy and you need open hillside if not baiting. I would check with local outfitters, or gun stores, find someone who will let, or rent you his station. The last time I hunted your area was 1968. If your going to eat the meat, wait as late in the season as you can when, when they are not eating fish.

In thick country (heavy woods) you have to bait or run dogs for bear. In open country you don't have to do either, but bait or dogs are easier. You don't have to bait all the time, just enough to get them in the habit of comming to the same spot to check and see if there is food there. I always used day old doughnuts mixed with bacon grease and what ever table scraps I saved. I would opt for the 870 with slugs.
I know what hunts you.
Up here they run dogs.
Or... if you want, you can be like us and accidentally leave something edible on the porch wake up to the dog and then shoot it with a camera![]()
Mountain Man
Bear Baiting is illegal in Montana, so is hunting them with dogs, but we still manage to harvest about 1200 black bears a year. Most folks hunt them by hiking high up onto a ridge that has a commanding view of a big area, glass for hours then spot and stalk.
The way of the canoe is the way of the wilderness and of a freedom almost forgotten- Sigurd Olson
Give me winter, give me dogs... you can keep the rest- Knud Rasmussen
i hunt bears for the past 22 years without bait OR dogs very successfull.
spot & stalk is the ONLY way to gofor me!
fall hunts are more difficult than spring hunts.
for your hunt, find a few new cutblocks that started greening up and have some berry crop.
watch this blocks in the evening. best time is the last two hours of daylight.
use heavy slugs (such as Brenneke or Lightfields) and break front sholders with
first shot, follow up with another behind the shoulder.
good luck!
Go to www.woodystaxidermy.com and research bear hunting in Georgia. We can not bait an many get good size bears.
Good luck,

The Black Bear around here will be feeding really heavy next month and traveling a lot. They tend to follow brooks quite a bit, to the point of being habitual. If you find a path beyond the range of most fishermen you found ones highway! A raspberry chopping is a sure bet. Picking next month without my dogs will be a no no. I’d stay close to an area with lots of sarsaparilla also. They will stay till they clean it out. A bear is a fine tuned eating machine, it’s about all they do! Baiting with nature does the trick!
When they drop their ears low on their heads it’s time for spray or the 308! Good luck!
