    Default Family Gathering

Spoke with my cousin today. There will be a family reunion this summer at Gabimichigami. Everyone will have to canoe in. It is a long day's paddle if you start early in the morning. As some of the family have been city dwellers for a couple of generations - this should be interesting.

Moving on in talks with my cousin. Maybe a canoe-in wouldn't be the thing - as there could be as many as 100 people showing up She thought it would be great to have it up at our g-grandfather's homestead at HXXX Lake. Get the younger generation a little more in touch with their heritage. Told her "fine with me," but the field's have all grown in, and the spring hasn't been kept up - road access is very poor (4 wheel drive or foot traffic only), but that we could camp at SXXX Lake - nearby.

SXXX LAKE. Beautiful place. Clearings surrounded by pines overlooking a great walleye lake, no fee, good boat ramp, Nine trout lakes on four mile trail - but also no toilets (we'd have to build latrines) and we'd have to get water from the lake and filter it. Soon as she mentioned it to her kids and their spouses - there was a howl, "NO TOILETS! ARE YOU CRAZY?!?" I'm getting pretty much the same response from my kids, nieces and nephews.

How is it that a family that once loved the woods so much turned into such a bunch of softies?

Okay! So, another alternative. We stay at CXXXX Lake Resort. They have a large campground on the lake that we can rent for $30 a night and they also have cabins, rustic, but with kitchen facilities, and one of them sleeps eight - perfect for everyone over 80. It also has a large indoor toilet, showers, and sauna complex. There is a roadhouse with good food, the TXXX Inn, right next door. Good bronze-back fishing in August and it is very close to the Homestead and the 40 where my grandfather lived in his log cabin.

Well, upshot is, we reserve a pavilion at a park in Duluth for a day.

What a bunch of wusses! No sense of adventure at all! I believe I'll manage to be off on the trail that weekend.

Yes, I admit it. I'd rather be in the woods than sitting in a city park talking to a bunch of city people.
