Snow goggles

We really need an equipment forum that is separate from survival and primitive stuff... I'm realizing this now that winter's upon us and I really don't want to construct birch bark goggles and stuff, hehe. Anywho,

Snow goggles... good for looking into the blinding wind to keep your bearings. Usually large, ungainly things labeled under "ski goggles". Why can't you use cheapo swimming goggles? Only thing I can think of is the straps might freeze to your skin... remedy by wrapping said straps in moleskin? I dunno, discuss.

One thing's for sure, I'm not spending $100+ for a damn goggle.

REAL'Men.....Real men use duck tape. Yes, it smarts a bit on removal, but no more than a flea bite. For highspeed snowmachining we ducktape whole face, leave breathing and seeing slots.

Snow or sky goggles, should be large enough and vented to reduce fogging and fit over corrective glasses if necessary. Even more important they should be UV protected and polarized to adequately deal with reflecting sun ray off the snow. I doubt swimming goggles would offer those similar features.
A good comfortable adjustable wide strap would be an asset.

Well yea for the duct tape, but I'm looking to reuse in a recreation pack. I have an old pair of swim goggles I was hoping to reuse in some manner during the winter. I have perfect vision so no worries on the overfit and I never cared much for UV warnings... living in snowland all my life. I just want something that'll block out the ice specks. But rather than run around in -20F weather and have some straps freeze to my face, I'd rather run it by the forums to see if anyone had prior experience with them first.

If they don't block UV rays or aren't polarized.. they just block wind and snow but let in those harmful rays that will get your eyes into trouble. I use my ski goggles when quading, skidooing, motorcycling and snowshoeing etc... a lot of justification for a good pair (my lenses are Ciena colored). When just hiking, canoeing, or in the outdoors I wear a good set of shades.

Yea I suppose UV protection wouldn't be bad while crossing snow fields on sunny day. Maybe I'll modify my summer Natives to prevent side spray. That should work fine.
