We've got a skunk (I think) that has been digging around the pumpkin patch at night.

How do you get rid of a skunk without getting skunked?

Seems a bad idea to trap or shoot it.

So - how to I get rid of the blasted thing?

It's a good bet the little critter is looking for grubs and the garden is easy digging. Spicy pepper spray on the ground might do it. You'll have to reapply often. If you can put up a fence (I don't know how large your garden is), even a small one, that would help. Skunks don't climb or jump so any kind of barrier would deter him (her?).

First you borrow the neighbor's dog without his knowledge. Handful of bacon, toss at skunk, let dog loose, sneak back inside. Problem solved.

Not a big skunk problem around here. The pepper spray should help. Since skunks are nocturnal lights may deter them. Live traps are an option. There are a whole host of skunk repellents on the market - I haven't used any, so can't give you a review.

Just something to throw out here, what about moth balls? Do yall think they would work?

Mothballs (paradichlorbenzene, not napthaline) will probably encourage a skunk to leave it's burrow. They do have some repellancy qualities, but placing them in the open, with air currents will probably decrease their effectiveness.

I may try a small solar light I have hanging off the deck... not very bright but might be enough to cause a relocation.

The skunk has apparently moved on ... over the mountain through the woods to sks-mom's deck and her potted plants
