Fast rope/Climbing rope build

Wanted to do this for a while. Made a fast rope using a 4 strand round braid, eye splice, and whipping. Found it on the Youtubes. More for climbing obviously, I don't own a helicopter. Yet

Started off practicing on some 550 cord so I had less of a chance of messing up on the big one.

Moved on to the bigger rope. Bit of a pain managing 35' ropes constantly untangling.

You get what you put into it…I used cheap HD rope instead of actual climbing rope. Didn't feel like making this a $300 project. But, a few times of climbing and sliding down and it's already started tearing off the mantle. Not what I hoped for but I guess now I can feel comfortable making one if I ever decide to spend the money on good rope. Looks like I made a wall hanger...

Yeah those helicopters are expeeensive haha...

I didn't mind building it because it was supposed to be an excellent climbing rope.... Sadly it's not... But that's probably my fault for using cheap poly rope. Slippery. A little thin too. I call it my "faster rope"

Wow! Impressive work! Just wondering if there is an advantage to this over just buying some 5,000 pound MBS climbing/rescue rope and making a simple 1.6" (fastrope) braid from that.

I'm totally into the idea of hands-on, make your own stuff, and I applaud you and all those who do it. That said (and sincerely so), I'm also all about safety. For life lines and climbing gear, I'd be testing the heck out of home brew gear before betting my life on it.

See, my idea was that the life supporting 5000 pound overkill rope was ... Well overkill considering it was an 8 rope braid. I still thanks that's silly, but the quality of the rope does matter. If this was solid braid low stretch nylon I'm sure the strength would be waaay more than enough. Even 300 pound rope x 8?

The problem is the mantle(sheath) is already failing and stripping. I'm worried about the integrity of the rope, not the breaking strength.

I wish rope wasn't so damned expensive. I still can't justify buying assault line for rappelling. Definitely not spendin hundreds on a fast/climbing rope anytime soon.

How funny. Around the same time of you posting this I got a smal hank of cord and 2 strand reverse braided with an eye for fun. Never done 4 strands though.

It's simple. Like most rope stuff. Few times and it's muscle memory. I thought this was going to take longer I learn. After watching the video and trying a few times I realized I already knew this from whip making LOL.

It seems fast roping isn't quite as much fun without that helicopter thing hovering above... Wee... Sliding... Yay...haha...

Kudos. Braiding anything that long is a pain in the keester. The really tough part is getting the individual strands to lay flat and not braid them in twisted, which is almost a certainty with anything that long and that small of a diameter. Still, you did a great job.
