Coyote tips?

Now that the ghillie is done i'd likes to go pop some coyotes. I hear a call is pretty much required. Don't have one. so I downloaded some MP3s of them. Do you think playing them over my phone while I perch on a hill is good enough or will that scare them off? Any other tips besides watch the wind/movement etc? Does it have to be early morning or late evening or can I get them during the day?

I just played "hurt pup" without thinking. My puppy is running around crazy whimpering and is now balled up in my lap and wont move.

I have injured rabbit, lost pup, and one other i think injured pup. I used then a lot when I lived in Arizona seemed to work OK, but not as good as a live chicken staked out.

BTW we didnt have MP3 then these were cassette tapes LOL Who remembers them?

What do you mean....you should my collection of cassette, 8 tracks, CD, 33 albums, 45's......LOL

I have killed 2 over a turkey decoy, but don't hunt them on purpose.

Coyote hunters around here usually use mouth calls to imitate a wounded rabbit. Is using recorded calls legal where you are? Here, not so much.

Ranchers hire hunters to eliminate the threat to herds in calving season. The professionals mainly hunt in the evening and after dark - which is legal for coyotes (you have to notify the area CDOW agent you will be shooting after dark). The good hunters do a lot of long-range shooting – often in the 500 yard range. They stake out the cattle herds and wait for the coyotes to come in. In that case they don’t usually use calls.

While it doesn’t fit your situation, some professional coyote hunters here use specially trained white german shepherds to lure in coyotes. For some reason, coyotes will follow white dogs. This is an instance where hunting with dogs is allowed. I am mindful of your recent experience with the animal control people, so maybe my timing on mentioning this could be better.

I have called in coyotes using a lost young elk call. Of course, I was elk hunting at the time.

If you have a hen turkey call, this might be worth trying.

Coyote packs sometimes form a routine where for a week or two they will follow the same circular route at the same time of day day-after-day. If you can discover a pack doing this, then go in a ways off from the route about 7 p.m. (Summer) and set up without crossing the route. Obviously, you would try to sit the portion of the route the pack would come by around 8-9. Try not to get skylined. I figure you know all this already.

Here there is a market for coyote pelts in good condition, so the coyote hunters usually try to go for head shots.

Sorry about your pup. You should have seen my dogs when I was teaching myself elk calling.

LOL Kill two birds with one stone.

Only calls i've seen around here are recorded, just curious if the iphone is good enough. But I just saw a youtube video of a guy calling one in off his phone.

So basically it's a waste of time if I don't go out morning/night. My captain is a crazy coyote killer. A few a week. Idk how there are any left. He gives good tips but is somewhat hard to understand. He also wastes pelts saying they are worthless. I would love brain tanning them.

No way i'm shoting that far out. Only have irons on my .308

Poor puppy pissed herself too. First accident in some time. That was so unexpected. Should have thought about that, she's still glued to my side and sad looking.

Ranchers here too love them shot. All sheep and goat farmlands. Not sure about notifying DFG or anything about hunting past hours or using bait etc. I want to do it more along the lines of hunting than exterminating.
