A car/train collision this morning in Virginia injured the driver. While alcohol played a factor in this morning's crash it's all too easy to become a victim. It's winter time, the vehicle windows are up, the heater is running, the radio is playing so it's very easy to not hear a train whistle and not all crossings have visual indicators. Slow down and take the time to ensure the crossing is safe before proceeding. Even those crossings with flashing lights could have a malfunction and the lights not be working so watch closely at those.
I lost an uncle and cousin years ago in a train/vehicle collision. It was at an unmarked crossing and they apparently didn't know the train was approaching. It hit them at 67 mph broadside in the driver's door. I don't remember how many feet the car was dragged but it was hundreds.
Heed the old adage: Stop, Look, Listen.
