Had to do a series of 7 low flow sampling events on a wooded site today. Could only work on 3 of them, low flow, boring. Every 15 min. ya need to take readings, then when ya get stabilization blah, blah, blah.

Well, site is located at Speghetti Junction, major thoroughfare, but there are woods behind the bus. parks and that's where I was.

It got boring, so I pulled out my home made file knife and a piece of flint, no char as I was going to use punk wood. After an hour, off and on, getting good sparks, punk was not catching, the area is a consid. wet one.

Learned a few things; gonna get me one of them thar sparker thingys, my Kabar, no matter how much I like it, the steel won't throw a spark.

Also, between the bark of a pine tree and the wood, it is edible and taste mighty good. Need to scrape a little, little chewy, but hey, I had piney fresh breath.

Now, there were alot of vines, the 1/4" ones were pretty strong, but bulky. So I took my knife, found a nice 2" vine, cut a circle around the vine above me and then a cut about 3' below. Peeled the outer layer of the vine, then tore it in 1/4" strips. Tied them together with a square knot, surprisingly how strong it was. Alot easier to work with than the whole vines and tied good knots. Def. would work for a spear head or making a shelter.
