Survival skills school

I love reading through threads and leanring from the folks on this forum. I was googling for survival courses near my area and there wasn't any. I did how ever found a course in San Antonio called the Human Path. I learn alot by reading and all, but would like to do some real hands on. I don't really have anywhere to practice this stuff with out folks thinking I am a crazy or dangerous. Hehehe... Has any one here heard ot know of them and what do you think of their courses. Thanks!

I never heard of that school, but I am in KY so it would be strange if I had.

Keep in mind that there are no guidelines, cirtifications or accreditations for "survival school". Any dufus with a Rambo knife and access to a state park can put an add in a magazine, newspaper or on the net. It does not mean they know what they are doing.

Be careful, some of these goofballs are actually sadistic outcasts (not the origional word I chose) who believe that survival is a test of endurance rather than application of knowledge.

Over the years I have gained a lot of knowledge from hidden sources. Archiological sites are an excellent learning environment. Many of the volunteers and staff are into study of the tools and lifestyle of the aborigional people. The sites close to me have knap-ins and field days were they build shelters, make tools and develop skills. ost of these workshops are free.

One of the parks where I once lived was an "urban wilderness area" that had a three mile hiking trail and a backpacking camp on the river. They had an excellent no trace class that qualified you to use the camp. They also did regular skills classes, cooking workshops, gear maintainance... It was all free.

Then there was ther North American Mountain Men. That was a three year process for acceptance and skills most survivalists never dreamed about. All of it mentored, observed and graded. No equipment or clothing was ever used that dated past 1836.

One aspect no one touches much is the first aid courses available from the Red Cross and American Heart. You can get some pretty serious certification from those organizations. You are not going to get that from a Bear G wanabe.

Pancho If I remember correctly there was a thread about that a couple weeks ago in general chat. There was one school mentioned in Lousiana or mississippi can't remember which.

I wanted to see if there was anything in my area some time ago.

I don't even know where to start with this critic. LOL

Some thoughts on surviving a gun fight. Move! aka don't be where the bullets are going. Maintain visual contact with your opponent. aka know where the threat is. You should either be creating distance or closing it. Not rolling around on the ground like a ninja.

They show two videos in Big Cypress. Both are a through hike of the Florida trail segment from Tamiami Trail to Alligator Alley. This is an advanced hike as judged by hiking magazines. Its hot , humid, wet terrain with zero topographical features. You loose the trail and you are lost.

Every couple years someone dies under estimating its difficulty. All that said. Watch their video as they hike.

Damned ninjas. LOL

I've performed similar moves to the guy in the first vid. It involved stairs and alcohol, however.

The best analogy I can come up with for the second vid is a hamburger walking to the table so I can eat. Somewhere in the vid were giggling alligators.

I've seen Bear Grylls cover terrain better thans those chaps.
