Maybe, maybe not.
I think "expert" is often used unofficially among regular people as a shorthand referring to "someone who knows more than we do" on a subject that requires a more extensive knowledge and experience than can be just picked up here and there.
We can't possibly know or experience everything no matter how important it is. If we don't trust others who have proven themselves in their particular field, we're really limiting ourselves. I think the responsibility comes in when sorting out what we've learned from the experts and applying it to what's right for us. That's one thing the experts can't tell us.
