    Unhappy Scared of the dark

    Start flaming im ready.

Although I hunt ,fish, hike, camp go into burning houses,I'm still so nervous in the dark I lay awake all nite. All the noises that put people to sleep keep me up which is why I have yet to do a solo trip.
Any help? or am i just a BIG wimp?

Dear god, thanks for the warning because I just put on my flame suit, mostly made up of
    flame retardant materials.

Get a tape or cd of wilderness sounds and noises. Play them softly at home while drifting off to sleep. Soon it will become a natural sound for you and you will look forward to it.

****Disclaimer***** I've got no earthly idea if that will work, but it sounded good.

Naaah, you're just a big wimp. Not really but you left yourself open by asking so I had to go there. Only joking. I have no idea what's keeping you awake so I'll wait for Dr Remy to weigh in on this one. Dr? Paging Dr. Remy....
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"

Actually what it is could stem off of watching to much " Cops " at night.

you really need to keep that to a strict minimum before bed.

P.S I heard that the boogeyman actually comes out at 10pm so you can beat him by going to bed at 9pm...

In the swamps of Florida the frogs emit an ear shattering clammor, so a few crickets and a wolf is becalming.

I have some recorded sounds of rain, loons, coyotes....very calming. I've never had trouble sleeping out in the wilds - I find that calming as well. Learned in the Navy - if you can't sleep, you're not tired enough.

Music in the woods is a chance to reflect upon the things that I could have done, I'd rather run from the wolf!

Nothing really like the sounds of nature. Thats really what its all about man, being with nature and experiencing all that it has to offer. Really thats what most can't grasp.

    Thats why nature has selection

I'd bet there's more than one on here that doesn't like the dark. It's not a natural thing for us to want to be in dark spaces. Our eyes aren't good at seeing in the dark and our senses of hearing and smell are not nearly as keen as those things that would bite or sting us. So it's actually pretty natural that you would feel that way.

If there is something that gives you comfort (knife, gun, club, etc) then take it with you. Just knowing your "protection" is there might help. Also, you'll have much better night vision if you look slightly away from whatever you are trying to see rather than directly at it.

If you want to do a solo then pick a night with a full moon and no overcast. You'll have all the light you need to see but still be on your own.

Rick hit it on the head, actually I know some tricks for sight and sound but its difficult to type it out. But yes, just like kids with their " Security Blankets "

If you live out in the country, open up your windows and go to sleep. You'll inevitably hear crickets, frogs, and all of the other animals at night and then the birds in the morning.

Or you can just carry Tequila and drink until you don't care or pass out...

in the nite the shadows crawl and creatures roam, what do we fear, the unseen presence of something more intelegent than us.
