Jack in the pulplit. Let the root dry for six months then roast it to make it edible. Tastes kind of like chocolate.

absolutely! there are several accounts of indians using a preparation of the root on sore eyes. It was also used for cold symptoms and as a tonic. Externally it has been used for various skin infections and against pain and swelling. Warning: No part of the fresh plant should be taken internally.

Calcium oxalate crystals present in the entire plant will cause a powerful burning sensation if eaten raw. Properly drying or cooking removes this effect and the indians used the root as a vegetable.

Several years ago I planted some Jack-in-the-Pulpits beneath a birch tree in my front yard. The stems are now a couple of inches in diameter and the red seed pods are huge. I have three plants with seed pods on right now!! Lot's of little guys are popping up all over beneath the tree.

This is another plant that contains Calcium oxalate crystal. We've talked about them before so you know you need to handle them in way to remove the crystals. Just as Merriweather pointer out. DO NOT eat raw. The roots are super bitter and WILL CAUSE BLISTERS in the mouth if you don't treat them to remove the crystals.

Went walking in the woods yesterday and DIDN'T SEE A SINGLE PAW PAW. What's up with this tree/bush? I'll bet they see me coming and sneak off to the other side of the woods. It's a conspiracy I tell ya!!
