Why I Carry - Dogs

Once again a couple of folks are killed by a pack of dogs. It can happen anywhere so even in the back yard open to umpteen acres I always have a
firearm handy. I like dogs but this is getting to be too much. I hate to dig holes
but if I must I must.

The radio said that the woman often walked her dog so we suppose that maybe she was out doing such when she was attacked and perhaps her husband was with her or showed up to try and help.

Hard to say but being a LEO would you do anything to those two elderly people walking in the woods armed? I know the "rules" but I know only one warden in WV that would. I wonder if among your peers common sense prevails. I hope it does.

Have you ever been in that situation? It's pretty danged scary. That was the one single event that convinced me to acquire my CCW. I was well armed, at the time, with a stout walking stick (like that would have mattered). They sure were interested. Kept a distance of about 30 feet but circled, I think, to feel me out. I stood my ground and I think my size with my pack and the stick convinced the alpha to move on. At least that's my interpretation of events. I swore I'd never be caught like that again. It could have been a whole lot different.

Been caught up a telephone tree a few times and had to thump a few with a line hammer or wrench but not a pack. Only bit once by an ankle biter (RIP). Been scared many times and will admit it. Had one come after me so big he threw up his leg and cut loose in the back of a dump truck, I quit.

I've been treed twice while hunting in Maine. Feral dog packs are becoming a bigger problem every year. The first time i was treed, I didn't carry a handgun and had to drop my rifle inorder to get up the tree. I won't tell how they defiled my rifle, but I then decided to carry a handgun in the woods from that time on. The second time i was treed, i had my Ruger MKII with me, I shot and killed 15 of the 18 dogs in that pack. The leader of that pack was a full sized Poodle and he was scary!

This morning.. yep today.. A bus driver from a public school asked me to leave my child unatttended at the bus stop in my front yard. Let's just say I was at the school for lunch... anyhow it boiled down to a bunch of blank stares.... I told them I may as well get my 6 yr. old a CCW!

At their age, I believe people would have had common sense about it. But if they were younger people, I suppose that a lot of the population wouldn't.

In one of his books Tom Brown talks about an encounter with a feral dog pack and it was when he was young, IIRC he spent a night in a tree and I believe he is slightly older than me. This isn't a new problem. It's been around for years. I've only encountered a single feral dog and that was scary enough. One reason I carry a good size blade(locking folder) wherever I go, might not be much but still better than nothing.
In S.Ga. a lot of fishermen carry a .22 cal. pistol for snakes and such and it's the rare Game Warden that gives any problem(usually younger and newer "hardcase" types). My Uncle was a Game Warden and he never said anything to anyone fishing or camping if they had a "reasonable" caliber handgun. Just don't carry one that would make it appear that you might be hunting.

seems to be a not so talked about problem,and not only in the states,italy i think where it was they are having a serious problem with packs of wild dogs killing people.i dont know i might be stupid but id rather tangle with an animal any day than a person,or atleast im less scared of animals than people.animals are a little more predictable than people and theres no end to the cruelty a person can bestow on another

a few years ago my father responded to call where a little girl was be chased and attacked by a pitbull that had gotten loose. when my father arrived on scene the girl was on top of a car bleeding really bad from her arms and legs and the dog was still jumping and trying its hardest to get to her. with no hesitation my father opened fired on the dog before it had time to turn on him. he said it took four .45's to take the dog out. when my father told me the story i was furious, not so much with the dog but with its stupid owners that cant handle or take the time to properly train their pets.
