Default An "I got lost in the woods" weekend

how many of us head to the state parks and rivers on the holiday weekends , just to get lost and have a survival situation?

mine happened 5 years ago in NC on Baslm mountain. the day hike planned ended up in a two and a half day trek through bogs and muddy mountain swamps infested with biteing flies and crawling with ticks. finaly finding a river i managed to raft my way to a highway.

what is your 4th of july survival situation?

    Glade you made it through.
I have uneventful July 4ths due to the canyons are filled with campers out there that starts forest fires. I'll hike but thats it.

Ummmmmm - I do my level best to not place myself in a survial situation. So far I've been pretty successful with that.

I put myself in a survival situation once and died. I vowed never to do that again.

It all started with the words "we need something from the store". What should've been a 15min trip turned into 2 hours of dodging the town idiots. I nearly didn't make it out alive. Luckily I remembered all the observations of people I have made in years past, so I decided to brave the feminine hygiene section, as I thought nobody sticks around that aisle. What could've been a life or death struggle through the seasonal goods section was bypassed because I had the good sense to study the animals that would be frequenting the place I was heading. :P

several years back a few of my friends decided to chase a forest fire in ocala, they drove thier car onto the numbered roads that led to the burning brush.

after several attempts to find thier way out of the woods they got lost. the hundreds of miles of dirt roads are confusing and not well marked.

they kept driving toward the fire and finaly came to a point where they had to abandon the car because it got stuck in sand and the fire was sweeping thier direction.

they hiked for ten hours through smoldering ashes and trees to the main highway.

they made it out with minor burns , but thier car burned to a crisp.

Your friends are very lucky. So is Search & Rescue in that they did not get hurt looking for their dumb a$$es.

Slightly confused, well maybe lost a little once way out of my territory in Northern Maine. I was a teenager, wasn't very bright and in a thick pine, swampy forest I got lucky after many hours getting nowhere fast I stumbled across an old logging road, picked a direction and followed until I reached a Y in the road. Thought a minute and turned around, walked a couple of miles and came out on blacktop where a nice man gave me a ride to my Grandparents. Glad everyone knew everyone else and I would probably get lost again if I was in the same position.
Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he's too old
to fight... he'll just kill you.
