Got a chance to see the first show when it was re-broadcast. Jeeze! They sure pick their people for what they don't know, eh?
My immediate questions:
Who in their right mind, who has ever even been near a mountain, would go over it - when you could go around it?
Who in their right mind would splash through a river with rubber boots that weren't high enough to keep the water out - especially with temps between 50 and 30 degrees? This one really got me. Have none of these people ever tried to dry out a wet rubber boot?
Then, to try and dry out rubber boots - they set them right next to the fire! After building a framework (lean-to) a good distance above the fire. Heat rises!
Loved that lean-to, by the way. A-frame on each end. At least one end should be a tri-pod - for stability.
I asked my wife (in the other room) what she would do if she came to a hip deep river, running pretty fast, wearing rubber sea boots and she had to cross the river. Without missing a beat, she said, "I guess I'd take off my pants, boots, and socks so they'd stay dry, cut two poles to steady myself, and walk across." "It would be tough on the feet, but not as tough as being wet afterwards. Then I mentioned that you have a pair of tennies you could wear in the water, and she said, "Well, Duh!"
The fire starting was a hoot. Finally took that older gal to get it going. Don't blame her one bit for leaving. Think I'd have done the same.
I didn't get the snaring at all. The camera didn't give much of a shot of what was going on on the ground. Wouldn't you look for something that indicated activity next to the water?
Then the fishing. Where do you find fish in a river full of rapids? For those of you who don't know - it's something you should find out. Time to get your pants off and get that net out into the water and chase the fish to shore. With that many people, it should be more of a group exercise. Same with the hunting. If you are in that wild an area - a group to beat the brush would sure come in handy. Birds probably never saw a human and won't flush unless you step on them. Put your gun man (person) on stand and beat towards him/her (make sure you have your most experienced hunter - who won't get buck fever and shoot someone - on the gun). Use your manpower!
So far this show is a lot worse than last year's. Not sure I can watch more.
I know it is easy to arm chair quarter-back, but some of this just seems like common sense.
