    Default Fire Plow Material

Hello there. As you can see this is my first post on these boards and as such I should properly introduce myself. From reading other posts, I can see that the older members command introductions.

Anyhow, I am 19 and a currently attending college and working toward a degree in secondary education. I'm from a rural part of south central Kansas(as if all of it isn't rural). I do alot of hunting and fishing. As far as hunting goes I am more of a small game hunter and I'm only mediocre at that. Fishing, specifically fly fishing, is my real area of expertise. I have been tying my own flies for about 6 years now and I supplement my tying materials with that mediocre hunting ability I mentioned.

I hope that was a thorough enough description. Now the question:
What trees in my area would be good for making a fire plow. I know the plow should be a hardwood and the board a softwood. What comes to mind when I hear that is Osage Orange and Cottonwood. Would that work?

Oh, and most people call them Hedge trees around here simply because that's what they made all of the hedgerows out of back in the 30s to cut back on topsoil erosion. I figured Osage Orange was more widely used though. Maybe someone could fill me in there too?

Thanks for the intro M&B. Both Orange Osage and Cottonwood are considered hardwoods, although the Cottonwood has a larger cell structure - making it a bit softer. I have not experienced using either of these woods for a fire plough. If I may add - for your softwood, avoid woods with a high resin content as they make it a bit more difficult. Here is a bit of info that hopefully you find useful.

Which would explain why I never could make it work at home using a pine board. It would smoke quite a bit but I never got a good coal

    Welcome to the madness M&B!

Whether it's a fire plough, hand drill or bow drill, you need wood that will make the most heat from friction to form an ember. You can use a hard & soft combo or a hard & hard combo. of woods, but as stated earlier, you have to stay away from woods that have resins (pine, cedar, etc.) or too much oils (silver birch, etc.) in them to get the proper friction needed to form a hot ember. Cottonwood, Elm, Osage Orange, Hickory, Ash, White Oak, Willow, Bear Grass, etc. work well.

Elbow grease, downward pressure and practice are the main keys to starting fire by friction!
Everything I have posted is pure fantasy. I have not done any of the things that I have claimed to have done in my posts. I actually live in Detroit.
