Here are some pictures of one of my early season guided sled dog tours. My clients recently emailed me their pictures so, I thought I'd share. There wasn't much snow yet, but still enough to run dogs. On the drive to the trailhead and back, we saw the resident Elk herd. Currently about 400 Elk have migrated to these winter grounds. It's very windy there...so, the snow blows away and theres food for the elk to graze on.

Sweet sled dog team. I've seen snow maybe three times here in Texas and it only lasted a few hours. How would those dogs fair down here in say 101F with 90% humidity?

Have you ever competed in any of the sled races or is it strictly a hobby?

I'd say its more of a profession and way of life than a hobby at this point. I have raced quite a bit, I own a guide service that people pay to go on tours, and I use dogs for transportation to get to my house and back, because I live on a road that is seasonal access only.

Good looking dog team! A local sled dog club uses our Boy Scout Camp twice a year to work their dog teams; once in the Fall (they put wheels on the sleds) and once in the winter. The Scouts get a real kick out of seeing them. The owners take time to talk to the boys and explain dog sledding to them. A good bunch of people.

Wow, paying the bills doing something you love. I would love to get there someday. Guiding has to be a dream come true. I've often thought about setting a sort of guide service, but fishing/touring/birdwatching from a kayak in the Texas Coastal areas. anyone besides myself ever had an "alligator bump"?

Hey clovis- I've been making my living as a guide for about 15 years, I have a year round guide service. In the summer we do whitewater rafting tours, multi-day canoe trips, and kayaking instruction. Check out my website
www.riversourcerafting.com in the winter its sled dogs. I am also pleased to announce that soon I'll be offering guided wolf watching excursions in Yellowstone National Park in the winter- as I just got approval for the commercial use permits within the park! That'll be something new I'll offer next winter.

If you ever decide to open your own guide service, feel free to contact me, as I've learned alot about jumping throught the hoops of operating on government lands, insurance, etc...
