    Lightbulb Parang

Has anyone ever had a real Parang or was able to borrow and use one? I like the small curve, and was thinking about attaining one for myself. If so, does anyone have a link where I can get a real one that's quality made? Like this pic.

Wow, quite a blade. I'm not sure I'd want to use one though. According to this Wiki article (hardly definitive), a parang is supposed to have three different edges along its length. "A parang has three different edges, the front is very sharp and used for skinning, the middle is wider and used for chopping, and the back end (near the handle) is very fine and used for carving.". A 12"+ blade (at 1.5 pounds) for skinning and carving ... that would wear me right out.

Might be kind of a pain to sharpen properly in the field. I'm sure many just sharpen it as one long blade edge and leave it at that.

Fargus, your right about a few things. I talked about them to a few people in , India, Thailand, and one from the jungles of Indonesia. They each said almost the same things, that they're the best cross between a Machete and an axe (and for protection!). And at 1-1/2 pounds it's much lighter than caring both.

Jay if your around, have you used one in your travels?

You can check on Ebay. There is also a feature on Ebay where you can be notified if a daily search finds something with the word "parang" in it.

    I'm googling parang now.

Well, I tracked down this site as a reference. That led to a company that makes all sorts of very interesting blades named Valiant Co. Prices don't seem outrageous and they have a Damascus parang (different design) listed here. Also check this page for what appear to be more traditional designs.

Fargus, interesting article from Outdoors-Magazine. Now I'm even more interested!

I know you directly mentioned a parang, but have you considered a khukuri as well? It's used for much of the same jobs mentioned.

I own one and I absolutely love it.

Good luck! Also, thanks for bringing this blade up. Very interesting design concept. Never heard of one before you mentioned it here, but now I'm as curious about them as you.

There is a difference, what you have (that I have used), is more of a mix between a knife and an axe. The Parang is a mix of a machete and an axe. yet there is a 3rd edge to the blade that can be used for skinning.

There are more than one type of khukuri. Though it's not the one I have, I'm sure this one could do the same jobs.

1.5 - 2 lbs at 25 inches. They do make them up to 30 inches...

Yes I know. But they're 2 different types of blades. Did you notice that the curves are opposite. That balance is completly different. You should read the link that Fargus posted from Outdoors-Magazines review of the Parang. Even the reviewer was amazed at how it worked!
