Hi people
A while ago I managed to mislay my winter gloves and as I had some beeswax and linseed oil around I decided to see if I could bring back life to a pair of old ones as well as an old jacket I had lying around to see how that would turn out. Now, I've used beeswax for waterproofing my leather boots before and am very happy with that, difference being that both gloves and jacket being textile. In my experimental joy I decided to go approximately 50/50 on the gloves and a full on 100 % linseed oil on the jacket, did what I had to do and then left the things in a well ventilated place where spontaneous combustion would not matter all too much. Off I go for a few months and then remember the project again. At this point, not too long ago, I look things up online and realise that everywhere I look people use boiled linseed oil, I have used raw. As expected the things were a bit greasier than desired and although heating the gloves makes the wax melt into the cloth beautifully, there is still a slight feeling of oil to them as well as the jacket.
So, back story done and over with, I was wondering if there is anything I can do about this or if I should delegate things to the bin of perhaps a little too impulsive projects? Am thinking heating the oil now might change the chemical composition enough to allow it to dry out, but I thought I would check if anyone around here has had any similar experiences or general knowledge before playing around with ovens and what have you.
Many thanks in advance and happy trails,
Martin
