Scoping a Romanian 22 trainer rifle without modifications
Got a Romanian 22 training rifle recently in a trade and found out the receiver grooves are too narrow for a modern 22 rifle scope mount. I had an old Tasco scope with rings on hand but didn't really want to modify the rifle just to put a scope on it and the rings simply would not tighten down small enough to fit the existing rail. It was close but not close enough and I figured why not use something to shim the space and found something that works very well. What I used was #18 solid copper wire cut to the same width of the ring clamps and after sitting the scope on the rifle I slid the wires between the ring clamps and the receiver grooves and then tightened the screws and it feels really rock solid ! Then to boresight the scope, I removed the bolt and slid my Streamlight Stylus Pro LED flashlight into the receiver so that it would shine through the bore and project a dot on a wall 2 rooms away and then adjusted the scopes crosshair to match up to the center of that dot of light. Reinstalled the bolt and took it outside to fine tune the adjustments and found out that it was right on at 30 yards ! Off the bench this rifle will shoot one hole groups at that range, so it will be fun when squirrel season come in this fall !
