    Lost Outrider,
I commend your dedication to helping these boys. My mother was a teacher so I grew up hearing all the stories concerning the administration and parents. You must have the patience of a saint. I too recommend a partnership with one of your local Scout troops or, at the very least, encourage your boys to look into joining. I was in scouting most of my adolescent life. I achieved my Eagle Scout. I will have to say that it definitely had an impact on my life. Probably kept me out of a lot of mischief. Scouting teaches boys to be self reliant but at the same time helps them to strive to better themselves. It gives boys positive reinforcement which is something these young men probably desperately need. I was fortunate that I had a good family life but I still believe it would help these kids immensely. If you have any questions, I would be happy to try and answer them. I have been out of scouting for many years but I will do my best to help you. Good luck and keep us posted in the weeks and months to come.

There is a Wilderness school in the center of the state. Perhaps they would be willing to put on a demonstration for you class at your school. I'm not certain how far into the northwest of Arkansas you are but you might just be close.

Also, if you can do a day outing the Buffalo River is one of the most pristine in the nation. I've canoed quite a bit of it and it's pretty awesome.

Interesting update. I've been . . . well . . . sort of promoted. Maybe reassigned is a better word. I'm no longer a classroom teacher. Instead, I have an office at the school and will still be focusing on "at risk" students. Just, well, not as their classroom teacher. I'll post more as I know it. This could be a very good thing for my boys.
