So I drained the water, put the berries in the colander, sprayed them with water for several minutes, and returned them to the bowl which I had refilled with clean water. Again, an army of dead bugs came floating to the surface.

I tossed the berries. I'm NOT going to flavor a few pounds of expensive duck breasts with ground up bugs.

Has anyone else ever encountered this with juniper berries?
This is easy to resolve, buy some Gin. Pour 300ml of Gin and soak the berries for 3 hours while drinking Gin martinis with the remaining Gin.
Seriously the bugs are not going to change the flavor of the berries, especially when you pickle them first. Cheers....

Found an old recipe for homemade root beer. It calls for juniper berries.

Me thinks that Zeroed4x knows that Gin is flavored with juniper berries. The word gin is an abbreviated version of Juniper in French and Italiano. Take moonshine and add juniper berries. Gin!
