Does commercial survival food have a really longer shelf life?

I am reading the LDS Survival Manual (as well as others). They have a list of recommended storage times for various foods. All foods are good to eat up any where from 6 months to 2 years after packaging. However, on commercial survival storage foods website such as http://beprepared.com/ they say that their foods are good for 20 years or so. Why is there such a big difference? Are their foods really good for that long? Has anyone tested the modern day suppliers for 20 years? Is home packaged food really only good for 6 months to a couple years?

If the can's not contaminated at the time of sealing, and it's still intact, they only things that will happen to it is that the texture comes apart and it tastes funny or bad.

As Canid indicated, the food will lose some appeal but it can also lose nutrition as well. Vitamins can be destroyed over time. Otherwise, commercially canned goods are safe to eat after extended times.

The way the food is packaged makes a big difference in storage times and how it is stored also impacts the shelf life. Most of the commercial sites offer freeze dried foods that have a much longer shelf life than typical canned foods packaged with water. Freeze drying removes the water that bacteria and other pathogens need. My guess is most, if not all, are also irradiated. Look for the optimum storage temperature.

As far as home canning, those storage time recommendations are based on quality rather than safety as long as they remain unopened. Here's a link that will give you food storage times on common items.
