That's really cool! I especially like the part about it being used to send design concepts to makers!

That's the first time I've seen a 3d printer in action. The next logical step I see is pausing and adjusting of the printing object to finish opposite sides OR add foreign objects into an inlay for the printer to continue printing over. Couple with a laser alignment system for specific location restarts in case the item being printed needs to be picked up or moved in any way.

It would be relatively easy to add any manner of automated homing or indexing to the proccess. Such implementations already exist in the CNC industry, and probably in some 3d printers as well. Remember also that this is only one type (an extrusion printer) of many types of 3d printing, or additive manufacture. There are others, such as SLS, which use laser sintering to solidify powdered materials (like a laser printer does with it's 'ink'. This later can even print solid steel and other metals, as can micro-welding, whcih is also cnc automatable. These technologies can be combined, or combined with subtractive machining technologies (such as milling, turning or EDM) to automate all maner of manufacture, even of parts/machines made from multiple materials. It's going to be a really cool field in the coming decades.

That (rapid prototyping) is actually what the technology was initially developed for. Particularly handy for cased where, e.g. a mold master can be made of wax, plastic, etc, where the final product must be durable. I believe prototype/master reproduction was also a significant influence in the development of 3d laser scanning, which essentially reverses the product, by scanning an object and producing a 3d model, which can produce g-code for automated manufacture, infinitely redistributable representations of objects, backups, etc.
