I have just dehydrated my last in the little machine I bought several years ago. It finally died after a long and fulfilling life. I've used it a lot over the years and will have to replace it.
I have several options, all well over $180. *sigh* looks like I'm saving again.

I don't know if middle England is humid but I've dehydrated on a window screen in the barn attic during the summer. Not a winter time venture unless it's by the woodstove.

In the height of summer I have dried herbs, but I don't think it would work for anything else, not without making a heat box anyway. At least I have an excuse to upgrade.

Winnie, Check out Alton Brown's Window fan dehydrator video below. The dehydrator starts at the 1min mark. All you need is a window fan, some cellulose furnace filters and bungee cords.

Now.....as for Alton Brown. I'd say that he is close to being a hero. Hahaha. His "dehydrator".....his "ceramic cooker" (flower pot smoker) and his "steak broiler" (charcoal chimney) are great examples of just plain thinking. I love it. He's like a mix of a mad food scientist, and a redneck. Hahaha.

Just a thought Winnie, but Walmart has dehydrators available at good prices.

Here in the states we have shipping to the store off the internet free!

If you have that option you could order off the internet from Wallyworld and get free shipping to the store.

My last $35 Walmart dehydrator lasted 10 years and I am well into the second one now.

I did look at buying one from US, but there is the voltage difference to consider. The only way round that would be a step up converter(a big one) or I move to US. I know which one I would prefer.
