Assuming that it is brand new... I would take it back to the store and get another one.. Question: does the signal meter work when mic is keyed? and does the signal meter show that it is receiving the carrier signal? Is the squelch adjusted too tight or the RF gain? Any old paint under the ground connections to interfere with the ground? How about the cig lighter plug? internal damage there? Not being there with it... it is hard to say what could be wrong with it at this point.. Could be damaged internally with a loose connection or burned connection inside too.. I'll say it again, if it is brand new I would just get another one if what is mentioned above checks out. to check it internally it would need to go to a shop or a ham operator in your area to run some tests. If you bought it used.. or from a friend.. or have had it awhile it may be damaged. But I am not there to make some tests so can't be sure at this point. Cigarette lighter might be widened inside (stretched out) and not making a connection??

Did you try an external speaker?

Ok.. just a guess... I re-read what you wrote.. and from a laymans take on this.. I would be looking at the synthesizer for the channel tuner.. may be damaged.

The shop owner will know what to look for. Probably can tell you more than I can and without even testing it.

I would call Radio Shacks corporate office and complain then.. Where you at in Michigan.. there isn't a truck stop anywhere... with an attached CB shop around? A truck driver may be able to help you too or make recommendations. If you can't hear anybody on the other channels as well it very well may be the channel synthesizer is the problem.. Sorry bud.. I can't help you beyond what I have tried..

My CB is pretty quiet these days without much skip. Make sure its someone around to hear you when you call or ask a friend with a CB to give you a check. Alot of truck drivers don't give radio checks. What is your SWR reading.

That's good. Don't forget your mike, a short in the cable can affect receiving and talking.

Are you confident with the antenna installation? Paying particular attention to it's ground plane?
gun control n. definition 1. The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker received that fatal bullet wound. 2. The ability to hit what you are aiming at. 3. The first key step of a corrupt political agenda where good citizens are disarmed so that a dictatorship may replace a democracy in the future.
