Thread: Got Sponge?

  1. #1

    Default Got Sponge?

I was reading that the Roman soldiers used a sponge on a stick for their latrine cleanliness.

I was contemplating packing a sponge. Has anyone tried this?

Uh, no. May I suggest a soft sponge be used?

I suppose you use what you have to use and the Romans (et. al.) didn't have a whole lot of options available. I pack TP with me. If I run out I think I'll resort to leaves. Butt thanks for asking!!

Yes the Romans did use that. Some asian countries still use it (per a missionary who prefers the sponge to toilet paper.)

Sponges, if used by multiple people, are a great way to pass bacteria and pathogens back and forth. Since the sponges are used a lot, they are always wet, and the bacteria tend to survive a long time.

I would absolutely wipe out the idea of a sponge.

Songes are living organisms with all kinds of nasties growing and living in them. Kind of gives a new meaning to "toxic sponges". I would prefer to take my chances with other materials that are available.

Why would one even consider a sponge for that when there is toilet paper?

Ummm - my bad with the artificial sponges. I was just going off the first post where you talked about Roman soldiers using them. Thought you were referring to those type of sponges. Now that I know what type of sponge you are talking about, I would have to say ...... no. You can always use something like a bandana if TP runs out and natural materials aren't an option.

After thinking about this for some time (about 2 seconds. That's some time isn't it?) I would have to say, ummmm, no. It's immoral. If it's not illegal, well then, it should be. Sponges are my friends.

I'm thinking a damp sponge would weigh the same as a whole mess of TP, and the TP would not get moldy or give you the "gift that keeps on giving".

That's it, I'm converted rebel. Sending my wife into the city to buy sponges. What would you use the yellow side for?

Eyeow!!!! The minute I saw that Scotch Brite my muscles went on lock down. I may not be able to even walk right the rest of the day. Thanks a heap.

Rebel - In case you haven't noticed, the Romans are, well, they aren't anymore. It might just have been those dang sponges. And if they tried to force other countries to use them that might be what all the fightin' was about.

Personally, if I don't have TP, then the knife goes to work on the shirt tails and the shirt pockets, no sponge thank you. This whole thread seems to be a pile of useless...s......information

At the risk of raising your ire, it was a fun thread. We had a good time at your expense and we thank you for it.

Now I feel bad , here I just wanted to use "pile" in a sentence cuz Rick beat me to heap and Crash beat to wipe. Hey, humor's an ugly business you know, some people would say, no never mind I won't go there.
