Earthquake hits L.A.

About 3 hours ago a 5.8 hit about 30 miles out of Downtown Los Angeles. No major damage, one water main broke flooding a street. The scary (to me ) is that a 3.1 hit Barstow, CA this morning. I hope there are no more, but if it does I am somewhat ready.

I'm not trying to make light of the situation jrock, but isn't that the way it often goes? I mean a smaller quake followed by a larger one nearby, and then other smaller ones? I'm about as far away from an earthquake zone as someone in North America can be, so by all means correct me if I'm wrong.

sometimes theyre followed by bigger quakes. id be very nervous if i lived in the vicinity of LA right now.

Your right but that 5.8 can still be the small one before the bigger one hits, thats the scary part.

nature makes her way to everyone's home sooner or later. I found it interesting that it has just been discovered that full on violent eruptions have been occurring under water in the arctic I believe, they used to think the lava flowed out all nice and smooth - now there is evidence of pyroclastic (sp?) flows beneath the surface.

Look at all the quakes this year - alot - China Greece, Japan....around April in the U.S. over 600 minor quakes had been recorded for the year!

I'm happy you're okay...and you're more prepared than most others in your region should Cali decided to fall off or...go hang out with Hawaii!

JRock, Are you new to the L.A. area? If not, you should be used to quakes down there. I live up north of you in the Portland OR. area. They have been predicting 'the BIG ONE' to hit here but never has yet, in fact we are way overdue for it. We get small ones from time to time. There have been a lot of small to moderate quakes out in the Maupin OR. area over the last year... quite frequent. I emailed the USGS and asked them about why all the quakes in a particular area.. within 5 miles of one another. The terrain is hilly on the eastern slope of the Cascade Mt. range just to the southeast of Mt. Hood and south of The Dalles OR. I never received an answer from them.. It is my guess that we are witnessing some kind of new formation of a new volcano there or it is just magma movement underground... possibly within or in proximity to one of the Mt. Hood vents. Strange that the USGS wouldn't respond to my email.

Earthquakes generally hit with a bigger one and then taper off with smaller aftershocks... I'll bet the one in L.A. and the one in Barstow are unrelated. I'd be watching for aftershocks in the L.A. area though. In other words, grab your gear and tent for awhile.. it's summertime. Then here is one that happened around Maupin OR. on July 25th, the lastest so far. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/...uw07252314.php If you have Google Earth you can put the coordinates in the search on that program and zoom right in on it. or Google maps will do the same thing, I think. Very strange for so many quakes in that particular area.

McStain says border enforcement negotiable. Obongo says East L.A. is prototype for future 'kwa. Schvartznig says keep them, but cut their pay.

I don't know about the Mexican jumping beans Bragsurvivor, considering I am Mexican and was in East Los Angeles when the quake hit- what excatly do you mean?

Ridge wolf- I was born and raised in Los Angeles, so I am not new to this but I still get nervous any time a quake hits So Cal.

Oh well at least we made it through the night without another one.
