Yeah, remember that guy that lived with grizzley bears? I think it was in Cananda somewhere, and it was big news when he got eatin by a bear. When I saw the documentary on TV about him, I would have bet my house that he was not long for this earth! Then a year later, it happened!
It is interesting how some people convince themselves that they can get a way with things that most people wouldn't even think about doing!

As I said before, I don't believe that Bear Grylls was directly responsible for the young man's death. The fellow was an adult and perfectly capable of deciding things for himself, however, it does prove that the things that Bear does on his show are not on par with real survival training. One case in point that I feel needs to be mentioned again is the "urine drinking." People are quick to point out that Bear was a member of the SAS; well, I've got John "Lofty" Wiseman's book on SAS survival and he states right in there to NEVER drink your own urine.("The SAS Survival Handbook: How to Survive in the Wild, In Any Climate, On Land Or At Sea." Page 42 under the heading: WARNING! Urine And Sea Water!) So where is Bear getting his information? Not from the SAS, that's for sure. I hope this never happens again, but I'm afraid that it will.

I think Bear drinks it because it's sterile and he likes the taste.

First, a prayer for the young man... Now for putting blame on someone, hard to do. Bear is a adventurist and has challenged himself in many ways that the average person would never be able to do. I believe there is still a primitive desire for man to challenge himself, we see it all the time here on the forum. We all have it or the topic of survival wouldn't be interesting to us. This same desire has lead men to great discoveries as well as tragic losses throughout history. Climbing Mt. Everest, sailing a small boat around the world, walking the Appalachian Trail, and deep sea diving for treasure, are just a few examples of extreme adventures people do today. With the proper preparation all these are considered reasonable adventures, but loss of life is a possibility of all of them. Reasonable preparation is the key, Man's desire to push himself will never change.

We can always blame it on the government for not providing heat in the little shack he sheltered in!

These things always remind me of my Grandfather. No not some imaginary Indian friend, my real grandfather.

He was born when we were still having Indian wars out west, grew up in the Tennessee hills and could find food and stay comfortable when you would have thought it impossible.

When the sky turned dark and the wind came up and the temperature dropped several degrees he had a saying I will always remember as some of his best advice. He would look at the sky and say:

"Kids its getting bad we better get to the house!"
