Boots in the Field Journal- Volume 2

As I have mentioned in previous posts, not only do I have sled dogs, I also have Karelian Bear Dogs, and I have taken clinics on how to handle the dogs and use them to confront bears and try to push them out of human inhabited areas to keep them from becoming habituated to us, and then getting in trouble. There is a saying in Montana, “A fed Bear, is a Dead bear”. This means, eventually bears that become accustomed to human food and/or garbage will end up having to be destroyed because they will get in trouble frequenting areas that humans live.

Last night I got a call from a neighbor telling me had seen a black bear on a carcass pile up the road from my house- just about a mile away….Although he was in the Nat’l Forest, we felt it was a little close to be setting up shop, because this time of year bears are scrambling around frantically trying to pack on calories before the winter. My neighbor and I thought my place might be really attractive to a bear in the vicinity, since I store huge quanities of dog food and frozen meat.

So, I packed up my backpack, got all my equipment and got ready to go looking for a bear!

For those of you familiar with my other posts, you may have an image of my kennel area in your head, and know that it’s a fairly open area- not prime bear habitat.

However, my house is 100 yards away from the kennel, on a bluff overlooking the bottom part of my property where there is a creek and wooded area- Prime Bear habitat!

Bears frequently cross through the open country around my dog yard to get from the higher mountain country…down to the creek bottom.

As you can see there is a lot of area for a bear around here (and not many other houses for miles)

So, I loaded up the dogs and we headed up the road a little ways, to get to the location my neighbor told me about. The puppy is Huckleberry (bears love huckleberries) he’s 5 months old…the other bear dog is Boom-A-rang (he always comes back) and he is a very experienced 6 year old who has run a lot bears.

We drive up there, because I want the dogs to be fresh if we encounter a Bruin…and if a dog gets hurt I want to be able to evacuate fast.

We get out and head off on a hike towards the meadow where the carcass pile was seen. At first the dogs are on leash until we get to the area

We find a mound of dirt with bones sticking out of it…and the dogs start going crazy barking…they pick up the scent, I take off their leashes….and then its off to the races

I didn’t get a lot of pictures through here, because I am running trying to keep the dogs in site as we go from the open country down to the timber

Then Huckleberry really goes nuts…and then I see…

    A black bear…

I yell “Hey Bear” just about the time, Boom-A-Rang sees him and takes off in pursuit…I then shoot my shotgun over the of the area that the bear is sprinting to. I reload and empty again…

and then start blowing my whistle to get the dogs to come back…

We then walk back to the road, load up and head home…which is in the opposite direction of where the bear headed! The dogs and I were satisfied that we had a successful mission and that Huckleberry is well on his way to being a great bear dog!

That was a great story. I sure shows how much different day-to-day life is depending on where you live. I'd never considered the need to shoo bears away that might be a mile down the road but your explanation is certainly plausible to me. Thanks for dragging me alone. Sorry I couldn't keep up. I had just gotten back from that 5k run.

I know a mile seems like a long ways away to be worried about a bear. But, a couple things to factor in are time of year/season (this time of year bears are ranging far and wide to locate easy to get food), and that there really aren't too many food sources from where the bear was hanging around to my house (there are no other houses in between us)....Also, if you notice when I was driving to the bear area...behind it is higher mountains that are already getting snow...so even more limited food sources. In essence the drainage basin I am driving up to get to the bear, is really acting as a funnel for the bear to follow down straight to my place in search of food.

Really, the only thing to eat in the area where the bear was is gut-piles from hunters and a few barely hanging on plants and berries. So, instead of having him come down the creek and end up at my place, I thought it was better to try and push him over into another area. Did it work...probably not, most likely I'll see him again- even closer to my place.

Again, the reason I do this type of thing, is because I like bears. I dont want them to get in trouble...this is preventative bear management...being pro-active dealing with a bear before it gets into trouble.

Plus, its good training for the dogs!

Wow, your area looks a lot like the low elevation wooded areas around here. Thanks for the report.

Nice report, thanks. I wonder how you train them to chase bears if you have no older dog. I imagine a lot of it comes naturally to them.

well the older dog is key....but, natural instincts are overwhelming...these dogs have been bred to hunt like this for centuries, so they take right to it....the goal is not so much to train them, but to refine their instincts to perform to your standards...
they are like Labradors or Pointers- they just have a natural drive to chase bears as opposed to retreive or point
