Homemade Grinder is done - Pic heavy

First ty to Camp 10 and P. moore for their help in getting started by showing me pics of their grinders. This project was not difficult and was enjoyably. I scrounged all the metal from past projects.

I have been collecting parts for a knife grinder for awhile now and after some encouragement I finally got one designed and done. The goal here is to build my own machine and do it as cheap as possible. I was able to build the machine for just a little under 50 bucks.

The motor was given to me free from a buddy and is a brand new 2hp 1740 rpm leeson with a 7/8ths shaft. I needed a drive wheel 10" in dia but buying one was out of the question so I glued up some 13 ply cabinet grade plywood and had my neighbor turn the wheel true and bore the hole for the shaft with his wood lathe. The idler wheel is a steel castor I bought that has 2 grease alimites so it can be lubed. I used the frame of the castor wheel for a swivel on the work table. This allows the table to be set at the angle I want for my grind. a small vice slides on the work table at the angle you set so all the grinds are smooth and even. That is pretty much it. if you have any questions just ask.

I did profile a knife with it tonight to break her in. with my file setup it took me 3 hrs to profile a blade but this one only took a tad under 30 min.

nice job, I like it a lot. this is something I need to do and want to one of these days.

what is the belt size? concerning the 10" wheel do you think that could have been attached to the motor and then turned true there rather than a lathe?

The belt is 2 by 72.

No. The motor turns at one speed only where as the lathe is started at a slow speed till the shape and face is trued up then it is turned faster to till it is balanced and flat.

If you tried using the motor it would vibrate too hard and could hurt you or come apart. Also the face of the wheel would not be centered too the shaft.

Good job, see what you need and make one, I like the way you think.
That should last a lot longer than some of the crap out there lately.

That's a dandy. I love stuff like that. You did a great job on it. If you add a variable rheostat or potentiometer to the input line you can change the rpm of your motor. As long as the motor has brushes it should work. There are lots of styles and designs but here's one to give you an idea.

I just thought if you were working with thinner metal the faster speed might heat up too quick. Just a thought.

I am not up on the electrical side of things so when someone that is up on it suggest a possible upgrade it is welcomed.

Rick I made this grinder for a tad less than 50 bucks so what would a varible controller cost?

I have a vice that I will post this weekend that was made to work on the table and I will post pics of a knife after grinding on it to show you how it works.

Nice work! That thing must crank with the 10" wheel! If you go with the rheostat like Rick mentioned be sure it can handle the amps of that 2 hp motor. Happy grinding!!

I am running it on the low voltage side right now but am tempted to see the 220 side as I have 220 in my shop.

So far I simply love it ! I have done nothing but profile a few blade and am waiting for the platen backer and other belts to come in so I can get to making some bevels.

If you know any commercial wiremen (electricians that work out of the hall) they can probably get you what you need for nothing. I'm not talking about stealing but if they wreck out some stuff they might be able to salvage one. If you buy it new, the one I pictured above is $25.
