Scary Sharpening Advice

Ok, I had to post this because it made me cringe. I would never suggest any of these methods of sharpening unless, well.... you didn't care about the blade. Gave me the feeling of fingernails on the black board.

I've heard about using the bottom of a ceramic cup or pot....(not for me).....But cutting thru alum foil............eeeewwwww, would be like chewing it...got leave the room now, feel sick.......

HaHa I thought i was the only one freaked out by the thought of chewing foil. Gum wrappers give me the willies. and the bottom of coffee mug does a good job of sharping a knife.

I used to do that in professional kitchens between the professional sharpeners visits. I used a boat shaped cassarole. It had a wide flat bottom and did a decent job on 1090 Stainless kitchen knives.

When I was younger and broke, some of you probably never used double edge razor blades. Anyway to get one more shave or two I would place the blade flat inside a glass, run it around a few times then turn it over. It did work or maybe I was fooling myself.

I chewed on aluminum foil....once. I picked up some station in Guam.

I could see using unglazed porcelain, ok not a bad idea. The pic showed course earthenware. Well in a pinch..Maybe. Until then I'll use my whetstones.

My wife uses the bottom of her grinding mortar for sharpening her knifes, the stone like surface is apparently just the grit she needs for the knife

I tried this on my old hickory the other day with a coffee mug. It will work in a pinch, but I still prefer my whetrocks.
