Spring Planting

When do you all start preparing your gardens? I was thinking around the middle of March to till it up and start preparing for an April planting. What do you all do to prepare your gardens? I am not sure where to begin besides tilling it up.

For your first year garden, the timing is much less important in my opinion. You can begin as early as you can work the ground without it being muddy. Our early springs in the Midwest (even winter) means rain so the ground has to be workable. Don't be discouraged if that runs you late into the year. You'll still be able to get a garden out.

This fall, you call till everything under and get your beds ready for next spring. Then you can plant as early as you want as long as the ground doesn't freeze. You can protect the crops with hot boxes or just by covering them if a late frost is in the forecast.

But the first year garden in Kentucky means waiting until you can work the soil.

Don't till too early. If you squeeze a handful of dirt and it stays in a clump, the soil is too wet for tilling. You can ruin the structure of a soil by machine tilling too wet.

Good luck Equus. I find gardening very therapeutic. When I'm feeling a bit down, I just go outside, chat to the girls and potter in the veg garden and the world seems right again.
I've just ordered my seeds for this year and will get the tomatoes going on the windowsill in a couple of weeks.
As to when to start etc, I'll leave that to the gardeners over your side of the pond. Just enjoy harvesting your produce!

I till in aries and aquarius all march long as long as it's dry enough. this is when I add in all my limes, and composts, etc. turning it will kill some of the helpful bacteria so don't overtill. down here there is always a cold spell at easter, or just before, we call it the "easter snap" and it usually brings frost (poco will be familiar with this, I'm sure). I wait till after the easter snap to plant anything that will be damaged by frost, like tomatoes (which I'm not planting this year.. blasted blight!!)

IM Excited to get the garden in as well. It was all containers last year, this year will a plot about 10 x 20 or so. But cant put plants outside till late May or early June.

Don't forget, you can do both. Take advantage of that new garden and the containers.

Oh i will, the deck looks empty without plants. And i found a good deal on upside down tomato planters the other day. So i have a new experiment for the garden.
