book for trade

speaking of trading i would like to see a tradeing corner here, but heres my trade, i purchased the book "one second after" by william r forstchen from amazon and for what ever reason i ended up with two of them, also charged for two of them, soooo i would like to trade that book (i'll even autograph it) for something you would like to trade it for, personally i would like some flint or chert as i cannot find it here

WE what do you want the flint for? Knapping or fire starting? I just got some more out of the pasture today, but I don't think it is knapping quality. Oh, no trade needed either. It's not like I have a huge quantity of it but I have about 1/4 of what I took to the Jamboree this summer.

pocco, not much of a knapper(except at work lol) just would like to try to spark a fire with rocks, have tried quartz, i have literaly tons of quartz around my property it is a very hard rock but i cannot get it to spark. like sarky says read the book, i am reading it again just to write down some ideas.

I'm pretty sure it's not possible to start fire with rocks. even flint requires steel for spark draw. I have read a few books on this, even tried it with the highest degree of failure. If it is possible, and anyone succeeds in starting fire with only stones, I want pictures and details.
Even Mr. Russel Cutts, who wrote the best material I've found on primitive fire-making says that it is impossible. I have talked to several people who swear they can make fire by banging two rocks together.. I hand them rocks that make sparks when struck together, and try as they might for hours, I have never seen a fire started this way.

not trying to crush anyones dreams, but I wanted to point out that the spark draw is just too short when using stones. If the paleoarchaeologists who study and write books on this say it's not possible, and all my experiments lend toward the same confirmation, then I have to logically believe it's not possible.

If anyone can do this, I want to see it.

and one more thing I'd like to point out is that chert has very little silication. My local chert barely sparks at all. you will need a very highly silicated flint.

War Eagle I will be glad to send you some flint. If you want to send the book, that's fine, but not necessary. Some of what I got this week (after a good hard rain storm) might be able to be knapped, but I am unsure of this as it was right at surface level, just barely discernible. I dug some of it up with a Hoe(again from right at surface level) while the hard clay was soft with the rain. Perhaps one of our "resident knappers" Canid, FVR, or Crash would know for sure as to the quality there.

Without a doubt I know there is some that is "Flint and Steel" quality. (I carry a pocket knife suitable to test for that,an old carbon steel knife) I know I had a dickens of a time breaking one or two of them.

well it looks like someones been doing his homework

i have been working on this for a couple of years now, i am not very good at rocks, quartz yes, that is easy, you think i would know more about rocks living in a mining town, but sooo many topics to cover and so little time.
this is something i am very interested in accomplishing

War Eagle PM me your address!! I can't just hand you the Flint through the monitor screen!!

Just let me know how much you need!! Almost all of it still has the "Cortex", although I did break some to make sure there was flint inside.Sometime there is a lot, sometimes almost nothing. It is almost all the Black type flint. I have one piece that is gray/white that I am going to hold on to as it is the only piece I have been able to find. (so far) I want to try and knap something out of it if I can.

Sounds good to me! A gold nugget would be nice! Just kidding. Something small and natural from the great state of Alaska would be nice. Something that you could just walk out and pick up that I can't find here. That should be any number of things.

Hey, Maybe we could pass the book around, Each member signing the book, and maybe passing on an item that is maybe unique to each area to the next one in line! Even if you already have the book,or have read it previously would be cool just to pass around and sign. Maybe auction it off later? Just a thought. Really it is WE's call. What say you mighty Eagle?
