Pretty tough question. Being a Marine NCO, yes I am a leader. I led Marines in the desert, mountains, and the jungle. Of my 8 years in, I was a platoon or acting platoon sgt. for a majority of the time.

Being a leader is not really that hard. What is hard is being respected. You either have it or you don't.

So, I don't know if I'm a leader anymore. But I will tell you one thing, I stand up for what I think is right, for me, and for the others.

Harry Truman said "A leader is a man who has the ability to get other people to do what they don't want to do and like it".

The operative word being-- "and like it". Otherwise we're talking about a dictator.

    I've never been a dictator.

Good discussion.I don't consider myself a leader at all..However,probably due to my military experience,I do consider myself mission oriented. This sometimes overlaps with leadership, especially when noone else wants to step up to the plate.

Welcome back Owl Girl, we've missed you on here. I consider you a leader ever since BeoWolf said he'd follow you anywhere!

Hey lumpy, and how many times have you been volunteered for the leader job? Don't ya just hate when that happens?

I never considered myself a leader - and I sure didn't seek it - but I've found myself in leadership roles more often than not. Professionally, I am a very effective individual. I trust my training and my ability to follow through on any claim or promise I make, which is interpreted by others as having a high level of confidence (if they like me) or arrogance (if they don't). Certain types of people are comforted by throwing their lot in behind the leadership and direction of confident, effective people.

On the same level, though, I tend to seek comparable levels of ability, effectiveness, and confidence in the people I team with. If I can find one who surpasses me (in my assessment) in those areas, then I've found a good boss - a good leader - a good individual to follow.

Now, all of that is professionally. Personally is another matter. I've always seemed to keep very select and very small group of close friends. The men are those who are similar enough to me in mentality, station, and temperament that I am comfortable with them. Other than their wives, I don't really have close female friends. I'm married to my best girl, that is enough. I'm not sure who is the true Alpha of our pack. I guess that tends to be situational as well.

I'm not sure if that pegs me neatly as a leader or a follower. I think we have to know when to switch between those roles in life. If not, then you have a tendency towards weakness and crippling self-doubt at one end . . . and a misguided sense of your own importance on the other.

Great people, wether they be leaders or heros, tend to be victims of the circunstances and events that surround them.
