Just heard this on the radio...
a British filmmaker who's been up Mt Everest twice and as well as to the North Pole was airlifted on Saturday from Tincup Lake (close to Kluane National Park, Yukon) after spending 50 days alone in the wilderness. He had been shooting footage for a documentary on surviving alone in the Yukon wilderness and the aim had been to stay for 90 days.
After finding the isolation affecting him badly, and finding it extremely hard to find enough food, he sent a satellite signal to be airlifted out. He had been mostly subsisting on fish, porcupine and later on berries. As a foreigner and documentary filmmaker, he obeyed the hunting rules and did not attempt to hunt for large game. He lost about 28lbs over the course of the 50 days.
The radio interview with the producer of the documentary didn't say much about his equipment, other than that he had a rifle and fishing rod along. Tilted “Alone in the wild”, it will air as a series on National Geographic Channel beginning in mid-September.
Darn, and I can't watch it!
