One more survival scenario

The way it turned out I stayed and built a fire while the other two guys went back out to get atv's to tranport them. Everything turned out fine. The reason I posted is that I always wondered what would I have done if I had found them by myself. The area we were in is a complete dead zone. No phone or two way radio reception. I guess a sat phone would have worked but I've never used one. It took the other guys 3 1/2 hours to get back to us with atv's. Maybe gps would have made it easier but we were using topo maps and compass at the time. I'd still like to know, what would you do?

The litmus test of correct action would be the final outcome wouldn't it? Since everything turned out fine, all of you must have done the right thing. Any dissection of actions can only serve to discover levels of improved productivity. I.E., What could you have done faster? How could you have returned them to civilization quicker?

As long as you got them out safely and in good health then your actions had to be correct.

I'm probably going to do my best to make a comfortable camp for the four of us that night. Build a proper shelter, secure adequate water & firewood, and do what I can to make the kids comfortable with the food that is available. My bugout kit has about 8,000-10,000 calories in it, so nobody's going to starve if it's my first night out, but if it's toward the end of the weekend, things might be getting down to the lean sausages.

In the morning I'd pack up camp and hike out with them. Barring anyone getting injured or wandering off, it'll be a good story to tell at the office on Monday morning and nothing else.

One of my sons and his friends led a, umm, 20 something "northerner" down a mountain and back to his truck a while back. The guy was half frozen and crying when the boys came upon him. Seems his pack was too heavy for his final ascent, and he couldn't find it on his way back down.

Now, how many things had THAT guy done wrong?

When I'm hiking and planning a 3+ day outing, I keep myself in the 5-25 lbs of gear category. Since some of it is food, it does get lighter at time passes. Since I travel somewhat light, I've never had to ditch anything. But I can't believe someone is dumb enough to drop their whole pack just to make traveling easier. If thing get too heavy, common sense tells you to drop nonessential gear to reduce weight.

But then again common sense isn't a requirement of modern society. I often forget some of these people often wander into the woods trying to be outdoorsmen. Luckily, I haven't found one of these in the backwoods yet.
