Little Practice With the Ice Storm

We had a little practice, no utilities for some over 12 days and over 25 deaths in KY. Don't know how you folks up north make it, the house shrank. Cabin fever is not fun. I had a few inches of ice, still do between me and the woodpile, but otherwise no war stories yet, worst thing so far I dropped a BIG chunk of firewood on my bare toe. I know we gotta start wearing shoes around here, I just forgot. We didn't have any problem and the cell phone worked, didn't get past the food in the kitchen cabinets. Ice in the hills ain't fun but just inconvenient and my relatives and friends in KY checked on each other. We were mainly just bored with the whole thing so far. Guess spending a little time around Caribou, ME helped but next time I will put my Jeep undercover, wheels are frozen in the ice.

Wow, that's a long time with no utils. Hope you had water and food. Don't burn fuel inside your house neither. See my blog, I wrote down the chemical equations of common fuels, they all produce carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide.

Still thousands here without power,and have had 4 confirmed dead of carbon monoxide,and 50 something treated for CO poisoning,all treated in hyperbaric oxygen chambers,if you have never been in one,I will tell you,it is a very scary thing to wake up inside of one of those chambers,and if you have IV's attached,they freak out if you move around in a manner that could dislodge the IV.

I have power,mine flicked off and on a few times,but pretty much stayed on after that.

Alot of the damage this time,is because the trees were compromised when we had the hurricane force winds in September,and these trees didn't come down or get cut down then,and with the added weight of the heavy wet snow and the ice,they just went down,taking the power lines with them.

So now they have to clean up the trees before they can restore power,and it's slow going in the cold temps.
Alot of it could have been avoided here in my area,but they just didn't want to spend the money at the time.

We didn't have any problems except cabin fever. When I was a kid in KY we had no electricity, telephone or running water and a single hole outhouse (we couldn't afford another hole) so I didn't have any problems. Don't think anyone around here(WV) and just across the river in KY were anything except bored, but it sure beat the coal stove we had when I was a kid back in the Dark Ages, I cranked up the ole generator so no problem.

Wasn't the single hole it was rough cut oak and it was my job to slide around
on it until all the splinters were gone and had a nice smooth polish. Now that
made a man out of you, or a woman depending on the size of the splinters.

Mine was out for about three days up here in Mason County WV.

We were fine and pretty much prepared to survive but by next winter I'm gonna have a few things different. So I will do a little better than just survive! LOL!

A generator is not a necessity but it sure would be convenient! And as you said less boring!

Got my power back on....wont be on long though....helping with tree damage/clean-up. So many people trying to profit off of disasters. I aint charging anything unless they really want to help pay for gas. I guess generators will be plentiful and cheap in a few months. LOL, actually it was kinda fun for me to hole up with the kids in the house and watch for looters!!!! Good times.
