Yeah, I kinda thought the same thing. I would not want to be an LEO and have my weapon full of electronics. And I sure wouldn't want it reporting in every time I drew my weapon. We are hanging cameras on them and now this. It won't take much and they will be afraid to get out of the squad car because something they are wearing or carrying is going to report in on them. And we know that data would never be misinterpreted or hacked.

Hey, I 'm still debating the revolver over automatic thing, so installing electronics is not even in the consideration of more things that can go wrong!

What kind of blog is that? The writer is far too gung-ho about this piece of err.....um.....technology.

Like some of the comments pointed out, cloud-based info is bound to be hacked. Tracking cop locations or worse, troop movements would be a really really dumb thing to put up there.

As someone on another site said about this (paraphrased):

When this "goes well," the push will be to force this technology on civilian firearms as well.

Lowkey - It's alloutdoor.com. I receive a weekly update from them. They look at everything under the sun for the outdoors. It's sort of a Reader's Digest for the outdoors. They pull in a lot of articles from around the net as well as using guest writers. He said up front that he's normally against this kind of technology. We've seen a push for this kind of stuff for the last decade and I'm sure if it happens in LEO weapons civilian weapons will be right behind them in some states. There are some benefits to the application but the negatives far outweigh the benefits in my opinion. Just like ammo stamping in California. It's a great theory but......

I am for this to be used for LEO. They are tax payer servants and while in such a role, performing such duties, should be monitored as much as possible. I don't think it needs to go to the point where they have to ask permission, but monitoring their actions to ensure their actions are legal and within departmental guidelines is always a good thing. I love my local LEO and think they are fantastic (except sheriffs office), but I know there are several agencies where corruption amounts.

This should not be required ever for civilians. Just like cops are required to record, civilians may do so if they want, but are not required. Same thing for this device.

Another upside is it could back up an LEO's story in a good shooting where it would otherwise be just his word. Another forensics tool.

To heck with the LEO's, its only a matter of time before they want every privately owned weapon upgraded in this way

These being used and required for LEO has nothing to do with 2nd amendment rights. Everyone has (or should have) the right to keep and bear arms. LEO are not acting as an individual with right to keep and bear arms. They are a public servant with a certain amount of legal authority. While performing their duties and in the course of their job, they should be closely monitored and held accountable to their actions. If they handle a situation correctly (legally and within their departmental guidelines) then great! The LEO that believe they are above the law and can do whatever they want to whomever they want are the only ones who should have concern. Like Rick said, it may provide additional evidence that will help them as well.

I truly believe there is a difference between a private individual and a government agent on the job when 2A rights are concerned and these should NEVER be required for regular citizens.
