I use 3mm elrid cord. Same stuff abseiling rope is made of but only 3mm thick as opposed to 11mm. I also carry hanks of th 2mm stuff bright colours and a 37kg breaking strain.
I have had Elrid go through three pairs of daily wear boots untill the speed laces got sharp then the lasted 10 days.

    Cool Well now...

I've been passing this thread by, but finally got around to looking at it. At 1st I wasn't going to answer, but then thought: Why knot?

What kind/type of laces will be dependent on several factors. What type of work/stress will the boots have to deal with. What type of terrain will the boots be exposed to every day. What about weather conditions? I don't "hoof it" near as much of most of you so 550 cord would work just fine for me. If I was in Hopeak's boots, however, I'd do just exactly what he's doing. I'm confident that 550 cord is great, but there's always better & stronger in everything.

After I had the same pair of laces for 2-3 years, the laces usually broke. But I did have a pair of leather laces, and those never broke. My vote is for solid leather laces. I don't know if you can even buy them anymore.

Try a leather store, not a variety store.
