iPad vs. Garmin for GPS functions

Folks,

Has anyone used an iPad for GPS functions in the outdoors that can give me some pros/cons of using the iPad vs. current Garmin for GPS functions? Many thanks.

Most tablet and phone GPS nav software won't work either properly or at all without data available. I suspect the GPS navigator companies paid them suitcases full of hard cash to get app developers to keep it that way.

Of course, you can still use it to get poisition fixes, and combine that with a map.

I've got no experience with the Ipad mini so can't offer a suggestion. I do look forward to a report on comparing the performance of the two. I wonder what the battery life is on the Ipad mini? Is he/you bringing a solar charger?

The last trip I did, I brought a Windows phone and a buddy brought an I phone. We each had a few apps, but all were useless. We couldn't even get GPS fixes. Stopped at a ranger station and they said it was all pointless out there. We had compasses, so went into a small town and spent 21.99 + tax on a topo.

Whatever you take, be sure it's designed to do what you want it to do and it'll do it in the area you'll be. Have fun and bring us some pics.

My guess for where you are going to be the issue will be reception. I have no idea how many sats they have in the northern latitudes but you know it takes at least three. Anywhoo. I would talk to some of your pilot buddies and some guides to see what they use when out and about and see how the reception is. It may be a non-issue for all I know.

I have the Garmin Nuvi and it works great for where we are. I've used it in many states through the Midwest but that's like comparing apples to oranges for what you need it for I'm afraid.

My advice would be to have your buddy take his ipad, and you take the Garmin. Then compare the two. I am interested in how the ipad works. I already know the Garmin will work flawlessly.

GPS usage is different for everyone. Some people want it to show everything. Others just want the grid coordinate. I just want the coordinate. I always have a map with me, so having something that tells me exactly where I am is useful. Anything beyond that is fluff and weight.

Go with the Garmin, as long as you have spare batteries they work, although always have a topo and a compass for backup!

I recently used an Ipad Mini to video my alligator hunt. The drawback was you could barely see the screen in direct sunlight. Otherwise great video.
