Default Growing food in the winter (Arctic)..............?????

Looking for ideas for small scale (The whole cabin is only 11' by 23') growing of food for survival in the arctic.

Thinking wheat sprouts for sure. Looking for high carbohydrate food ideas to grow in small window planters. Maybe scions/onions for the vitamin "C" to fight scurvy.

Is there anything I could grow in the crawlspace....with grow lights......there would be NO fresh air....???

You'd get a lot more Vitamin C from pine needles in the form of tea. That would leave you more room for other plants unless you don't like the tea.

I'd suggest a couple of Nasturtium plants. It will give you some nice flowers and both the flowers and leaves are edible. They are tough to get started but easy to grow. You'll get about a six foot vine but you can run it up the wall or set the pot up high and let the plant trial down.

You can also get a lot of leaf lettuce in a small area. You could probably do well with a Mesclan mix.

I just got a couple of big bags of mixed sprout starter. Yum. I can't wait to eat them. I'm sure it will help through the winter too.

That's a good point, Randy. Purslane is another in that category. It works well for a salad. It is crispy and doesn't have any bitter flavors. The really nice thing is you can just pinch off a piece and stick it in the dirt and it will root on it's own. Once you have plants you don't have to worry about seeds going forward but they make a ton of tiny black seeds if you let them develop seed pods. You can use it as a salad, stir fry it or cook it like spinach. Everything above ground is edible including the seeds. Here's some additional info on it.

Just remember you cannot let the cabin go below freezing if you want to grow things in planters.
