Gravity water filter < $60?

Looking for links to buy a gravity type water filter under $70us. A google search gave me about a million pages.

Are there better quality filters? Or just filter elements that can filter more water than another brand element? I noticed some filter 500 gallons, others filter 2000 gallons before replacement is needed.

NOT LOOKING FOR A PUMP TYPE FILTER.

The Katadyn Base Camp filter (with bag) seems to run $60-70.

If you are willing to go a bit more (about $70) then you can get the MSR SweetWater Filter System including a Platypus bag. That's what I use and I think it's great. I have no complaints with mine.

If you just want the water filter, you can get it for less that $60.00

The claim for Katadyn's Siphon filter is:

Simply place the ceramic filter (hose attached) into the container, place the container on higher ground, and let the siphon action take care of the rest.

However siphons do not start themselves. You have to suck on it to get it going. I have never used a siphon filter, but have used siphons to clean my fish tanks for 3 years, every weekend. I would think the slow water moving through the filter would NOT be enough to keep the siphon going. Has anyone ever tried a siphon filter? Does it work after you get the siphon going?

NSA has one that runs under $60 and I love it. I do not have the # for it. It filters 250 gallons. It is a 4 piece unit. It it gravity feed and it fits in my pack.

It does not have replacement filters. You replace the hole thing.

For the BOB's I have H2O-to-go straws.

Hi, I've been looking into Katadyn's Camp (#8013637), Base Camp (#8010655) and Siphon (#1120070) filters too. Katadyn doesn't seem to sell the Camp in the US though it can be found at online retailers. The Camp and Base Camp are two different filters and are from different product lines (Endurance and Backcountry). So chose carefully! The Camp has the superior silver impregnated cleanable ceramic filter- the filter good for 20,000 liter. The Siphon is actually the replacement filter for the Camp.

I'm going to buy a Camp or Siphon filter in April.

I've heard over in the UK some outdoors folk, and I believe the British armed forces, use a gravity filter system called a 'Millbanks Bag'. I do not know how much it costs, or if it is available in North America, but from another forum I visit, it's users seem to like it.

Good ideas people. I did buy a candle filter element for $45. But after spending more money to buy PVC parts to make my own Berkefeld filter, I've already reached $75. I should have just bought a commercial filter from the beginning.

We used the Katadyn Base Camp when we made the move up here last year. Lots of bad water in BC! It worked great, but took 5 minutes to fill a 32oz Nalgene, but I didn't have to pump it or tend to it.
Not bad for less than $60.00 IMHO

They say they're good for 1 Million Gallons! Pricing in at $55 seems like a good deal.

They also have a Point Zero Two that will filter out viruses. It's higher priced at $132.

I think that any claims of being able to filter 1 million gallons of water may be a bit dubious. How about filtering over to the Introduction Section and tell us a bit about yourself. Thanks.

If these things actually work as they claim, I'll buy one tomorrow. I'm going to run this by a few engineers and water treatment experts I know. I'll post their responses ASAP.

I have the Katadyn basecamp. I keep it attached to my Camelbak squadpack (holds 26 liters of water and is carried like a back pack) . The Katadyn works great and the filter cartirdges are replaceable.
