I can only imagine what the farmer was thinking when he saw this coming in for a landing.

Boy what a story that was. How do you think the Air Force operator reacted when the Sheriff called to find out how to shut off a jet that landed in a field.

We had an F105 run out of fuel and land on our local 1/2 mile airstrip back in the 70s. It ran about 25 feet off the end of the runway.

They turned it around and pushed it back onto the asphault, put just enough fuel in it to get it off the ground and strapped a couple of JATO rockets on it for boost. About half the town turned out to see the takeoff.

Some cracker jack pilot took off in 1/2 mile of strip and flew it 15 miles to the local AFB.

They told that he ran out of fuel on the runway as he was taxing in after landing.

A high school friend went to the Naval Academy and became a Naval Aviator. They had to periodically practice their "hands off" take offs and landings. Yep, the aircraft really could do it. When they did their required hands off flights, they wore black helmets and white gloves. Their white gloves had better be visible on their helmets when viewed from Pri Fly (primary flight tower). Mike told me that the first few times he did it he had his white gloves velcroed to his helmet.
